The Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign is a Las Vegas landmark.\u00a0 It was designed by Betty Willis and built\/installed in 1959 by Las Vegas-based Western Electric Displays (also known as Western Neon) under a contract with Clark County.\u00a0 The cost of building the sign was $4,000.\u00a0 Young Electric Sign Company (YESCO) has owned the sign since their purchase of Western Neon in the early 1960s. The company currently leases the sign to Clark County.<\/p>\n
In late 2008, Clark County employees sought to have the sign listed on the National Historic Register of Historic Places, the Nevada State Historic Preservation Office officially nominated it, and the National Park Service approved the designation on May 1st, 2009.<\/p>\n
On December 6, 2013, the State Historic Preservation Office for the State of Nevada announced that the \u201cWelcome to Fabulous Las Vegas\u201d sign had been added to the State Register of Historic Places.<\/p>\n
On April 19th, 2015, the designer, Betty Willis, died in her home in Overton, Nevada, at the age of 91.<\/p>\n
On May 5, 2015, Clark County Commissioners declared May 5th \u201cBetty Willis Day\u201d honoring the designer of the Sign.<\/p>\n
Betty Willis considered the sign her gift to Las Vegas.<\/p>\n
